The order to form the old 34 Wing was given on 9th August 1941. Six wings, numbered 32 to 37, were created under Army Co-operation Command to support each of the Army Command Headquarters. 34 Wing supported Eastern Command, with their headquarters co- located at Luton. One year later, the order of battle was: 2 Squadron (Mustang) based at Sawbridgeworth 140 Squadron (Spitfire and Blenheim) based at Mount Farm 168 Squadron (Tomahawk) based at Bottisham (not yet operational) 268 Squadron (Mustang) based at Snailwell 613 Squadron (Mustang) based at Twinwood Farm 652 Squadron (Air O.P.)
