In March 1945, three new
Mark XIX Spitfires
arrived at 16 Squadron in Eindhoven.
Powered by Rolls-Royce Griffon engines, they were a significant advance on the Merlin-
engined
Mark
XI
. One of these was
PS853
,
which survives today, owned by Rolls Royce
Heritage Trust. It is painted to match the
photograph above and flies at air shows and
demonstrations.
